Even the quietest of runners can become something of a nervous wreck on race morning. All of your marathon training in Jaipur, weeks of long runs, and nutrition plans can go down the drain quickly if you show up without the right gear! A loose shoelace lock, or forgetting your bib number or even your hydration belt, can ruin your entire race. This is an all-encompassing checklist to ensure race day goes as smoothly as training.
The Non-Negotiables
These are the things you simply cannot do without while running:
- Put on the race bib and timing chip the night before (not the morning of!).
- Wear shoes that are in good shape and have already been worn in—don’t wear new shoes the first time you run a race!
- ID and emergency contact information—many races will need to be visible or carried.
- Entry Confirmation/QR Code—to collect this at the entry or use the gate to enter if not picked up
Hydration and Fuel
Although there are aid stations along the way, many runners like to run with their own supplies, particularly for longer distances.
- A soft water bottle or hydration belt for water/electrolyte solution
- Energy gel/chews (1 every 30-45 minutes during races longer than 10K)
- Electrolyte tablets, especially in this heat and humidity of Jaipur.
- A little snack prior to the starting gun (banana, toast, etc.)

Clothing and Weather Gear
Beginners don’t notice how important their clothing is. The weather at the race day may rapidly change from start to finish.
- Wicking shirt/pants—cotton will absorb sweat and lead to chafing.
- A disposable layer—temperatures quickly climb after the sun has come out.
- Sunglasses and a hat to protect from sun glare for the last half of the race.
- Anti-chafe balm to use before leaving home to prevent chafing in underarms, thighs, and feet!
Small Items That Make a Big Difference
- A small bundle of tissues or a small pack of tissues.
- GPS tracking watch or phone (for pace monitoring)
- Earphones (if permitted by the race) and a fully charged cell phone
- Some safety pins in case your bib should come undone during the race.
When it comes to race day, it is only when I am at the start line, always, that I feel prepared.
Why Do Preparation Habits Start Long Before Race Day?
This checklist becomes second nature to you after consistent training with others that have gone through it first. One of the great perks of running with a morning running group in Jaipur is learning these little helpful tips from people who’ve already made the mistake so you don’t. One person in the group has not been wearing sunscreen, and one person in the group has not been wearing new shoes. That’s a collective experience that is part of your own prep.
The community Pink City Runners is formed around exactly this, and a typical week of running, combined with a pre-race meetup, is a good forum for this. Along with this come the group dynamics, which means you’re not always figuring everything out by yourself—from carpooling to the start line to the exchange of gear tips or even spare gels in the end stretch!
Final Thoughts
Your race-day checklist should be one that you’ve practiced, not one you’re reading for the first time on the morning of the race. Prepare everything the night before, verify your bib and shoes, and have confidence in what you have trained for. Be it marathon training in Jaipur or your first ever half marathon, the key is to get there prepared and then just simply put one foot in front of the other.
